As with any appliance that deals with water, mold and mildew can become a problem. And the last thing anyone wants is clothes that smell like it. To get rid of any unwanted residue from both your clothes and washer, follow these steps to eliminate the problem entirely.
First, turn on the washer so that it fills to the highest level with hot water. Run a cycle so that the agitator begins to turn.
Now add 3 to 4 cups of white vinegar and 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda to the water. After the solution mixes in for a few minutes, turn the machine off so that the solution can sit inside the machine. Let it sit for an hour.
Next, restart the machine and let the cycle complete. After the cycle has completed, wipe the inside drum with the same water-vinegar solution. Be sure to wipe the plastic rim of the drum and pull back the rubber gasket surrounding the drum to wipe away dirt and debris.
Finally, run the washer a last time with a hot-water cycle.
