Washing Machine Maintenance (March 19)

The change of season is a perfect time for maintenance checks on your household appliances, including your washing machine.

First, check the unit's hoses for leaks, punctures or wear-and-tear. A good rule-of-thumb is to replace hoses and tubes every five years. Stainless steel or plastic hoses will last longer than rubber hoses.

Check to ensure the washing machine is level. This will prevent extra rocking and noise when the unit is in use. Adjust the legs of the unit so that all touch the ground.

Keep an eye on the lint trap. If you don't have one connected to the washer, install one. During the spin cycles, machines collect lint and send it down the drain, which can lead a clogged drain and send water everywhere. An easy fix is to attach a mesh lint trapper to the drain hose to prevent lint from going down the drain.

To prevent stains and rust from the outside of the unit, wipe down the top and sides with a mild soap or detergent and soft cloth. Non-abrasive cleaners can be used to remove stains. Do not use abrasive cleaners or cloths, as it will scratch and mar the finish.
